Influenza is a contagious disease that is caused by the influenza virus. It is more commonly called the flu. Every year millions of people around the world suffer from it and many even die. It attacks the respiratory tract in humans. This includes the nose, throat, and lungs and is different from a cold. It usually comes on suddenly and may include these symptoms; fever, headache, tiredness (can be extreme), dry cough, sore throat, nasal congestion and body aches. These symptoms are usually referred to as "flu-like symptoms." It can be mild in many people and can kill the elderly and very young. There are ways to avoid this with the most important being a healthy and clean lifestyle.
In mid life many people will seek an annual flu shot that they believe will help prevent the disease from attacking them. It is usually a seasonal ailment causing most problems in the fall and winter. The shot is expected to keep a person protected for a year. However as the strains of the disease change very rapidly, no shot is fool proof. It is just a tool used by people that fear their health is too fragile to risks the energy required to battle this disease.
The most effective way to avoid infection is to be very aware to washing your hands and not transmitting the germs yourself. The flu is usually transmitted through direct contact. A healthy diet and food supplements can also boost your immunity so you do not suffer the discomforts the symptoms can bring.
