Depression, the mood disorder that can steal the joy from your life

Mood disorders come in many forms. Depression is one that is familiar to many of us and can be very damaging to a person’s life. It can disrupt relationships, hinder careers, effect overall health and destroy the quality of a person’s life. It is more common in women than in men. The terrible effects it has on a person can often lead them to greater problems like substance abuse and alcoholism. There are nine questions you should consider if you suspect depression. There are many symptoms to look for and if we see too many of them, we're in trouble. They are mood depressed; sleep disturbed; interest and enjoyment blunted; guilt feelings and self-reproach, energy gone, replaced by exhaustion. Concentration shot, indecisiveness present; appetite and weight are down (sometimes they are up, more often down). Also included are psychomotor agitation (can't sit still) or retardation (just sit and vegetate); and suicidal thoughts.

Depression can be treated in many ways. Therapy is often part of the treatment plan. Chemical imbalance is considered to be the source of depression and many people believe that medication is necessary for recovery. There are many drug products on the market that your doctor can prescribe.

Nature also provides us with food supplements that can assist in recovery from depression. Saint John’s Wort is one of these products often recommended. Many people find it helpful and add to their treatment routine. No matter what choices you make for treatment, you should be sure not to let the symptoms persist for too long. The longer the suffering, the larger the problem can become.
