Healthy bowel function keeps your day moving smoothly
Bowel function is something that we usually don’t think more about than the end result. When that is done we don’t think about it until we have a problem. The bowel is part of the digestive system and is part of the process involved in digestion food and feeding our bodies. It is a very complex process and healthy bowel function takes a complex interaction of muscles and nerves. The process is partially controlled by us, as we need to control the final result or the emptying of the bowel. A sign of problems is the lack of this control. For obvious reasons, this is not a problem people talk about too often, but it is more of a problem than we may realize. Women following childbirth are often left with damage that leaves them incontinent.
There are many other reasons for bowel function problems. They may be a result of a surgery, diseases such as Parkinson’s disease, rectal prolapse, infections, spinal injury or stroke. As we age, the occurrence of these problems increases. There are a few exercises that can be done to strengthen the sphincter muscle and improve the situation but these are not usually too helpful.
There are many products like pads and pants, anal plugs and collection apparatus that help deal with the situation. It is recommended that we eat healthy and take food supplements to reduce the risk of developing poor bowel function. Maintaining a healthy bowel is easier than dealing with problems in later life. Understanding your bodies needs will be a great help.
