Blood pressure, the battle of the beat !

Blood pressure is simple to understand once you know what it is. It is the amount of pressure that the blood puts on the walls of the arteries as it moves through the body. Blood pressure is recorded as two numbers; the systolic pressure (as the heart beats) over the diastolic pressure (as the heart relaxes between beats). The measurement is written one above or before the other, with the systolic number on top and the diastolic number on the bottom. A blood pressure measurement of 120/80 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury) is said to be "120 over 80." Normal readings are less than 130 mm Hg systolic and less than 85 mm Hg diastolic. It is important to have these readings taking with your annual check up to stay on top of any problems you may have.

High blood pressure is a concern for many people. A consistent blood pressure reading of 140/90 mm Hg or higher is considered high blood pressure, another term for hypertension. Any form of high pressure is dangerous if not properly treated. If left uncontrolled, high systolic pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack, congestive heart failure, kidney damage, blindness, or other conditions.

The key for any high blood pressure treatment is to bring the condition under proper control. Blood pressure should be controlled to less than 140/90 mm Hg. There are medications and a treatment plan that a doctor can help you work out. And you may also be interested in exploring healthy food and diet supplements that will address the problem.
