Colostrum and breast feeding; will knowing the facts improve your babies health the natural way?

It has long been a belief that babies are best served if they are breast fed. Colostrum is the first milk your breasts produce in the early days of breastfeeding. This special milk is low in fat, and high in carbohydrates, protein, and antibodies to help keep your baby healthy. It is extremely easy to digest, and is therefore the perfect first food for your baby. It is low in volume but high in concentrated nutrition for the newborn. Colostrum has a laxative effect on the baby, helping him pass his early stools, which aids in the excretion of excess bilirubin and helps prevent jaundice. As little as three days after giving birth a woman will start to produce more mature milk that is lower in this important element.

Colostrum works like a very effective and natural vaccine for your baby. It is very important that they receive it after birth as they are born with immature immune systems. Before a baby is born it depends on a source of antibodies provided by the placenta. It is recommended that a baby be allowed to nurse nine to twelve times within the first few days after birth.

Colostrum has an especially important role to play in the baby's gastrointestinal tract. A newborn's intestines are very permeable. Colostrum seals the holes by "painting" the gastrointestinal tract with a barrier which mostly prevents foreign substances from penetrating and possibly sensitizing a baby to foods the mother has eaten. When the mother starts to produce mature milk, the amount of these benefits may be lower, but the baby will be drinking more and thus still stay protected.
