American Diabetes Association encourages to increase Physical Activity & Healthy Weight Management
The American Diabetes Association today pledged its support for the goals and activities of America On the Move, a national initiative dedicated to helping individuals and communities across the nation make positive changes to improve health and quality of life.
With type 2 diabetes growing at epidemic proportions, it's imperative that we do everything we can to raise awareness about the significant health benefits that can come from making simple lifestyle changes, said Caroline Stevens, interim Chief Executive Officer, American Diabetes Association. Science has demonstrated that type 2 diabetes can be prevented or delayed by taking relatively small steps, such as losing a modest amount of weight and increasing physical activity to 30 minutes a day, 5 days per week.
The American Diabetes Association is pursuing multiple activities that encourage increased physical activity, especially walking and reduced caloric intake. In teaming up with America On the Move, the Association is developing a program to encourage companies -- large and small -- to play a more active role in the quest to improve the nation's health. The American Diabetes Association is working with its Board of Corporate Advisors, a group of companies that supports the Association's mission, to develop the program.
We want to help people walk their way to a healthier future. We are committed to creating a healthier, more productive workforce that will benefit the employees of each of our companies, said John Lechleiter, BCA Chair and Executive Vice President, Pharmaceutical Operations at Eli Lilly & Company.
We are excited to be teaming up with the American Diabetes Association and look forward to working together to help people make simple, small lifestyle changes that can help lower their risk of developing diabetes, said James Hill, co-founder of America on the Move. Our goal is easy and practical.
It's about motivating Americans to get on the move -- literally -- and take two simple steps to better health by moving a little more and eating fewer calories each day. Involving corporations who are willing to help their employees improve their lifestyles and work performance is an important part of our outreach efforts.
