A new health walk at Westport Lake is to be opened

A new health walk at Westport Lake is to be opened on Tuesday, March 9, 2004.

The Westport Lake walk has a choice of three routes including a wheelchair friendly path.

It will be officially opened at 12 noon on March 9 by Bill Heslegrave of the Forestry Commission and Professor Christine King, Vice Chancellor of Staffordshire University.

The walk has been constructed by a partnership of the New Leaf Woodland Initiative, the City Council’s Environment Team, Staffordshire University and the Forestry Commission.

Rachel Bailye, of the New Leaf project, said: ‘We are aiming to encourage more people to use the woodland for health-related activity, the benefits of which are extensive.

The new health walk makes the wildlife conservation area at Westport Lake more accessible. It is hoped people will be encouraged tyo take up walking as a gentle form of exercise. The walk is part of a range of improvements at Westport Lake being made under the Greening for Growth scheme.
