An active healthy lifestyle is a key component to aging well

In honor of the Chinese New Year, the Administration on Aging recognizes the efforts of our partners, the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging and their work in helping AoA improve the health in the Asian American elderly community.

The Administration on Aging, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $356,365 grant to the National Asian Pacific Center on Aging to conduct a three-year model project that targets health disparities among Asian American and Pacific Islander elders.

An active healthy lifestyle is a key component to aging well, said Assistant Secretary for Aging, Josefina G. Carbonell. By providing culturally relevant and appropriate health information and services to the Asian American and Pacific Islander communities, we can help prevent or delay disease and disability and reduce health care costs to our nation.

NAPCA is targeting health problems common among older Asian Americans in 13 elder AAPI communities in states including: Washington, California, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Illinois, New York, Washington, DC and Texas. The project activities include a series of interventions, specifically designed to address health problems of AAPI elders through the distribution of translated and culturally appropriate health education materials.

The program also includes a healthy lifestyle promotion, disease prevention program that incorporates disease specific seminars, healthy lifestyle programs, screening for early detection and case referrals.

Specifically, the project addresses the development of useful, understandable and timely information on health promotion, disease prevention and affordable health care programs for vulnerable, under served multi-cultural AAPI elders with limited English proficiency.
