Friedrich HazardGard Hazardous Location Room Air Conditioners Boast Major Enhancements

Friedrich HazardGard, the only room air conditioner UL listed for hazardous location applications and meeting the United States National Electric Code, Article 500, requirements for Class 1, Division 2, Groups A, B, C and D hazardous locations, makes seacoast protection a standard feature and thickens fins by 33%. Seacoast protection and thicker fins are especially valuable in harsh, coastal environments where salt water and humidity can speed corrosion.

Coils undergo a 7-stage pretreatment process, followed by an electrodeposition coating which is cured at high temperatures to seal out corrosive agents and dramatically lengthen the life of the unit. Salt fog tests have demonstrated that seacoast protected coils continue to perform at 1500Hrs versus unprotected coils that degrade beyond use in as little as 250 Hrs. According to Graeme McWilliams, Friedrich’s Quality Manager, Salt corrosion is a major degrading factor. Seacoast protection should at least double the life expectancy of coils. We have also made our aluminum fins 33% thicker than previous models which offers additional life.

HazardGard room air conditioners are designed to cool living quarters and other enclosures situated in hazardous locations where specific volatile liquids or gases are handled or used within enclosed containers or systems. Model SH14J30B has a cooling capacity of 14,000 BTUs and Model SH20J30B has a cooling capacity of 19,000 BTUs.

Unique safety features include: a permanent split capacitor; a totally-enclosed fan motor to ensure efficient operation even under adverse conditions. Friedrich’s new B model HazardGard units utilize new, improved solid-state electronic controls. Additionally, a hot gas bypass low ambient control permits operation without freezing at outdoor ambient temperatures as low as 70C. The on-off switch is environmentally sealed and the thermostat has gold-plated contacts for corrosion resistance. The unit is shipped with a junction box and lead wires for field installation with a 15 amp HACR circuit breaker to accommodate direct wiring.

Applications include, but are not limited to, offshore oilrigs, petrochemical sites, propane fill-up stations, paint and varnish storage or processing sites. HazardGard is also suitable for areas using strong solvents or chemicals, PVC or plastics plants and processing points, furniture refinishing/ stripping workshops and office complexes where methane is a byproduct.
