Air Filtration Products Help Healthcare Facilities Prepare For Bioterrorism Response
Abatement Technologies is reporting a significant increase in the
demand for its HEPA-CARE isolation room products since the events of, and
subsequent to, September 11, 2001.
Founded in 1985, Abatement Technologies, Inc. is a leading manufacturer of
indoor air quality remediation products for healthcare, commercial, industrial, HVAC,
and governmental clients. The company’s HEPA filtration systems for hospital isolation
rooms and other applications are used by more than 1,000 healthcare facilities throughout
North America.
The company is utilizing its extensive experience in designing special HEPA
filtration systems for TB isolation rooms to help in the battle against bioterrorism,
according to David Willyard, Abatement’s vice president of sales.
Our HEPA-CARE systems are Class II medical devices that enable hospitals and
other facilities to quickly and economically convert standard patient rooms into isolation
rooms, in accordance with engineering guidelines issued by the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention. Demand for these products has been extremely strong
according to Mr.Willyard.
While the company does not make any efficacy claims for anthrax, Mr. Willyard
does believe that the company’s products can help: The similarities between TB and
anthrax are very striking from an air filtration perspective: Both are rod-shaped, grampositive
bacteria, with a typical size of two to five microns.
The gel-seal HEPA filters
used in our HEPA-CARE systems are individually tested and certified to a minimum
filtration efficiency of 99.99% at 0.3 micron. We believe that these filters can effectively
capture anthrax spores.
