The Irish Health Trade Association meet Food Safety Authority of Ireland to discuss the results of their survey of Herbal Supplements

The Irish Health Trade Association represents an independent industry sector comprising of 33 members who manufacture or distribute specialist Health Products – Whole Foods, Food Supplements, Traditional and Homoeopathic Medicinal products, and Natural Body Care products.

We welcome the consultation with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland which took place on Monday 2nd February on the findings of their recent survey of herbal supplements.

The Irish Health Trade Association shares the concern of the Food Safety Authority of Ireland that particular herbal supplements on the market have been identified as being either irradiated or containing irradiated components.

We concur with the Food Safety Authority of Ireland that their findings are not a food safety concern, and we acknowledge that the absence of appropriate labelling does not best serve the consumer.

Initially we are asking member companies to issue a product recall of the batches identified in the survey. Following discussion with our own member companies, we plan to work with associated manufacturers of herbal products to ensure that safeguards are put in place to ensure the elimination of irradiated herbal supplements on the Irish market.

As representatives of the natural health sector, the Irish Health Trade Association calls for all its members to work towards the provision of irradiation free health products.
