The Wellness Community Speaks Out On Lung Cancer: How Much Do You Really Know

The Wellness Community of East Tennessee will host the first lung cancer educational seminar of its kind. The program will feature a leading medical expert providing new information about the disease and encouraging patients to build a more proactive relationship with oncologists, nurses and the patients’ support network, including family and friends.

The FREE seminar, entitled, ‘Frankly Speaking About Lung Cancer: Stepping Back to Take a Closer Look,’ will also explore new ways to manage treatment side effects and quality of life issues. With approximately 169,000 individuals diagnosed with lung cancer in 2002, the Frankly Speaking seminar is a valuable resource for people with cancer. This program gives patients and their families the opportunity to learn the latest information about this disease and develop vital skills to become an active and informed partner with his or her treatment team, said Debra Sullivan, Ph.D., program director at The Wellness Community.

The Wellness Community continues to set the standard in cancer support and encourage individuals to know that they are not alone in the fight for recovery. Frankly Speaking About Lung Cancer will feature Dr. Russell F. DeVore III MD, a renowned leader in thoracic oncology and Lori Peters, RN, OCN, an oncology nurse. Dr. Devore is currently the principal investigator in 17 clinical cancer trials and has lectured in virtually every major city in the United States, as well as in other countries. Lori Peters, RN has 12 years of oncology experience ranging from inpatient hospital care, outpatient clinic care, radiation oncology as well as stem cell and bone marrow transplant. Additionally, Alice Kincaid, 4-year lung cancer survivor, will encourage participants to become a Patient Active in the fight for recovery and offer inspirational guidance about living with cancer.

The half-day seminar begins at 9:00a.m. on Saturday, November 16 at Rothchilds Catering and Conference Center on Kingston Pike. It will provide information on the types and stages of lung cancer, diagnosis, treatment, clinical trials and side effect management. Sponsored by an unrestricted educational grant from GlaxoSmithKline Oncology and Lilly Oncology, the seminar will be available nationwide at various Wellness Community facilities. The Wellness Community is a national non-profit organization dedicated to providing free professional programs of support, education and hope for people with cancer and their loved ones.

Through participation in professionally led support groups, educational workshops and mind/body classes utilizing the Patient Active Concept, people affected by cancer learn the skills necessary to regain control, reduce isolation and restore hope regardless of the stage of disease.
