Pangaea Systems Inc. successfully launches the Phis

Pangaea Systems Inc., in cooperation with Health Canada, has launched the web-based module for the Public Health Information System. PHIS is an automated integrated client health record and reporting system that supports public health provider interventions. The application includes: client demographics, personal health services, communicable disease surveillance, scheduler, Lab, STD, TB, outbreak and mass services. Pangaea Systems Inc. has been involved with the PHIS project since April 1994 when B.C. Centre for Disease Control initiated the development of the original Oracle-based client/server application then provided continued support and maintenance services.

In April 2000, Health Canada bought the IP rights to further develop and license the web-based module as the public health case management component of the Canadian Integrated Public Health Surveillance project. When B.C. Centre for Disease Control won the Health Canada contract to move the Public Health Information System into a new technology, we knew we needed an organization that was willing to work closely with us all along the way and one that could go that extra mile when needed. Pangaea stepped up to that challenge and more, says Layton Engwer, Director, Information Management, BCCDC.

PHIS-web has been very successful and received overwhelming endorsements: Health Canada is currently in the planning stages of implementing PHIS in 9 other jurisdictions. Since its implementation, PHIS has accrued benefits to its main clients: the providers of health services and to health authority management. These clients are now able to receive a service at any one of the health authority offices regardless of where they were recently presented. They have access to historical patient information, offering appropriate and adequate services.

Clients are able to access individual records at any health authority and be assured of security. Together, Pangaea, BCCDC and the pan-Canadian CIPHS Collaborative have developed a truly world class solution for Public Health, says Brian Kenworthy, Executive Director, Pangaea Systems Inc.
