Publications focus on water-wise landscaping, growing herbs

How to create a water-wise Wyoming garden and how to grow herbs in the state are outlined in two new publications available from the University of Wyoming Cooperative Extension Service.

Landscaping: Water-Wise Wyoming Gardens suggests a step-by-step approach for incorporating plant types from annuals to evergreens that do not require much water into a garden or xeriscape.

The publication discusses developing a landscape plan, turf issues, plant selection and zoning, soil improvement, mulches, irrigation and proper maintenance. It also suggests trees, shrubs, perennials, vines, groundcovers, grasses, annuals and shade plants that have low water needs.

Gardening: Growing Herbs in Wyoming explains how to grow, cultivate, dry and preserve herbs and includes charts that contain planting and harvesting instructions, lists of culinary uses and descriptions of individual characteristics for 16 popular herbs.

Written by Karen Panter, UW CES horticulturist, the two bulletins are part of a series of gardening publications being developed to offer a variety of information about plants and landscapes to state residents.
